ASSIGNMENT
Design a three-poster typographic series titled “Radiant Tomorrow: Poetic Visions of an Afrofuture” interpreting the work of Aimé Césaire, Anaïs Duplan, and Eve Ewing. Each poster features a distinct layout, unified by a shared conceptual vision.
OBJECTIVE
This project aims to create a visually unified and dynamic poster series that displays image and typographic hierarchy to effectively promote three poets featured in a spoken poetry event.
RESEARCH
SKETCHES
Producing a large volume of hand-sketched ideas was essential for sorting through concepts and identifying the strongest ones to develop further. Having a wide range of explorations made it easier to recognize what was effective and what needed to be let go.
EXPERIMENTAL FREE PLAY
From sketching came experimentation, the process evolved through physical manipulation of text. Printing out the text encouraged creative experimentation, allowing for unique effects that would be difficult to achieve digitally.
INITIAL ITERATIONS
After taking photos of the experimental free play, putting those images in photoshop was essential to exaggerate the contrast and get an idea for the final concept.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS
After the initial iterations, the focus shifted toward multiple concepts to determine a final poster. Option #2 was ultimately selected, as it most effectively and emotionally captured the author’s identity.
The posters were developed in Photoshop to push creative exploration beyond the tools most frequently used, allowing this project to serve as both a design challenge and an opportunity to expand technical skills outside of the usual comfort zone.
OPTION #1
CONCEPT: "CURRENTS OF THOUGHT"
Explores the beauty of identity, imagination and creativity through a strip of swirling color. The strip flows through the poster to represent movement and transformation.
OPTION #2
CONCEPT: "THE HIDDEN DOOR TO TOMORROW"
A door standing in an unexpected place. Nothing revealed beyond the frame but a bright light. Inspired by the authors visions of hope and a reimagined future. The light representing future possibilities.
FINAL POSTER SERIES
The series shows different pathways toward a collective, radiant future. Each poster has a light source that guides you to a reimagined world.
